The Shure SM58 has been an industry standard microphone for over 55 years! It is the most popular live microphone in the world, although initially developed as a ‘Studio Microphone’ (SM).
The SM58’s sister-microphone the SM57 has been an instrumental microphone with unparalleled reputation, and has been used by every USA President since its introduction in 1965.
Ironically the SM57 & 58 were developed for classical music, it’s designer, Ernie Seeler, hated rock music – and yet the SM57, specifically, has been the most popular instrument microphone for the rock genre, even to this day.
The SM58 is essentially the same microphone as the SM57, but designed to cater to voices better, whether live or in the studio.
